Security and compliance center in Office 365.
A short recap with the error message, you try to run a content search within the Office 365 Security and Compliance Center (or you have done this) but you cannot see the results and you get the following error message:
“To preview search results, please ask your Compliance Admin to grant you Preview permission.”
You get this error message because you do not have enough permissions in the Office 365 Security and Compliance center. This is not the Global Administrator role.
In the steps below, I explain where you can find the permissions and which you need at a minimum.
Get me some permissions in the security and compliance center.
In the left menu you will find permissions almost at the top
When you open it you get a list with different organization roles.
Each role contains different permissions.
To perform a content search and view the export you can have different roles, but the easiest is the eDiscovery Manager role.
When you open it you see all assigned roles.
Then click on Edit role group.
Here you get 2 different roles:
The administrator role should (to my knowledge) have more permissions, so you add yourself to this role.
Although I do see various question marks on the internet about this, so also check this post if you get an error message.
The steps are also in the steps below.
As I have already indicated, the eDiscovery role can best be used if you want to be able to perform a content search. Within the Security and Compliance center you have more than just a content search, so if you need more permissions then that check whether there is a better role for you.
