TUTORIAL: Creating a child theme in WordPress

Child theme wordpress | Why use a Child Theme?

There are a few reasons why you would want to use a child theme:

  • If you modify a theme directly and it is updated, then your modifications may be lost. By using a child theme you will ensure that your modifications are preserved.
  • Using a child theme can speed up development time.
  • Using a child theme is a great way to to learn about WordPress theme development.

Creating a child theme in WordPress

A quick explanation of how to create a child theme in WordPress, because some people asked for it after my previous post.

This is mine child theme css file:

Theme Name: twentyfifteen Child
Theme URI: http://baswijdenes.com/portfolio/twentyfifteen-child/
Description: twentyfifteen Child Theme
Author: Bas Wijdenes
Author URI: http://baswijdenes.com
Template: twentyfifteen
Version: 1.0.0
Tags: light, dark, two-columns, right-sidebar, responsive-layout, accessibility-ready
Text Domain: twentyfifteen-child

@import url("../twentyfifteen/style.css");

-------------------------------------------------------------- */

Log on your FTP Server and open the wp-content directory > themes directory.

Create a directory here named ‘yourthemename-child’.

Copy and paste mine child theme in to a notepad and save it as ‘style.css’.

The following options are important to be changed before your child-theme will function normally.

  • Instead of mine domain, change it to yours.
  • Change the ‘twentyfifteen’ theme name in the theme name you’re using.
  • Make sure the @import URL refers to the right directory.

Place this notepad file in the child theme directory.

Now go to ‘themes’ in your WordPress interface and choose the child theme as main template.

And viola you have a Child theme WordPress
